Prayer Letter - New Guinea
News
November 9, 2001
Friends and Family,
Friends and
Family,
After a 5 hour drive and then a 2½
hour hike we finally made it into Lele, in the Mengen tribe. The
hike was straight down for 45 minutes, across a river and then
straight up for 1½ hours. With Avalon on my (Aaron’s) back and Lori
in pain from each breath due to pleurisy we felt like the hike took
forever and thought the tribal people would surely be talking about
“those weak Americans” the next day. However, when we arrived the
missionaries were surprised to see us so soon and the tribal ladies
came to see “the woman who ran up the hill” (speaking of course of
Lori not me
J).
We spent one week trying to finish the building of a missionary’s
house. Lori did great helping me with projects, watching Avalon,
and slowly mending from her illness. I was able to install the
solar panels, finish the electric, work on the plumbing, make a
banister for the steps (which we are standing in front of in the
picture above), build two desks, and put in a pantry/closet in the
kitchen. When the week was finished, the helicopter came in to
deliver supplies and we got a free ride back to the missionary
base. Thank you for your prayers while we were there. Not only
were we able to help the missionaries, but also got several ideas
for our house when we go tribal.
Praise the Lord! Our crates
arrived safely only three weeks after scheduled (which is a praise,
because the same week another missionaries belongings arrived
battered and six months late!), also the customs and tax were not a
high as they could have been. So now we have the privilege to
retrieve a few buried treasures from home when we need them.
Meanwhile, we are continuing to plug away at language and culture
here at the base, and have now started plans for our house and
furniture.
Family News: While we were in
Lele, Lori celebrated her 23rd birthday. Thank you to
those who have been praying for her health. She is doing much
better now, just a bit more tired than normal. Avalon is learning
and doing more everyday, including an overuseage of the word “No!”
and her first skinny dipping experience under a waterfall. We also
got word that my little brother Josh is now engaged to his
girlfriend/fiancée Julie Jo -- Congratulations!
We are continuing to seek God’s
direction for what tribe we will work with and what teammates we
will have. Please continue to pray for us in this area. Also, next
week we are to take check 3 of 4 in the trade language and would
appreciate your prayers for us in that. Thank you for the
encouragement and support you have been to us.
For His Glory,
Aaron, Lori, and Avalon
